Ask The Imam Question and Answer

1164 I understand that if I was travelling for more than 58 miles then I would read Kasr Namaaz? How many Rakats is this and what Niyaat do you read e.g. 2 Rakat Nafal, Sunnat etc. ?

The other question is that, if you are staying over at someone’s house, do you follow their Namaz timetable and read the full Namaz accordingly or do you have to read the short version of it? Please let me know. Jazaakhallah Khair
If a person falls into the category of a traveler then he is required to perform Kasr Namaz instead of the whole Namaz. However it is also important to understand that the Kasr Namaz would be performed only if you are reading the Salaah on your own, behind a person in congregation who is also a traveler, or if you are the Imam. If you are reading behind an Imam who is not a traveler and a resident of the place you are at, then in this case you are required to perform the full Salaah behind that Imam.

The place you are staying at, has no direct influence on which type of Salaah is to be performed (i.e. Kasr or Full), the only condition would be if you pray in Congregation as explained above, however the Salaah timing of that place would have to be followed, as the timing may vary.

As for the method of performing the number of Rakats, please refer to question 777.
