Ask The Imam Question and Answer

1217 I have observed many people can walk to Masjid but Pray Obligatory (FARD) Prayer while sitting on a chair. As I know Qayyam in Salah is Fard otherwise Salah is invalid. Can you please clarify this and is there any relaxation for people who sit on chair?
You are right to point out that standing (Qiyam) is an obligation of prayer. There are six obligations in prayer, or Fara’idhs; Takbir Tahrima, standing, recitation, Ruku’, Sajda and sitting at the end.

However, if a person has some physical illness or injury which prevents him from standing, then all the Scholars agree that he can sit and perform prayer. In fact, if he cannot sit and perform Salah, he can lie down and perform it. This is because ‘Allah does not burden a soul more than it can carry’ (Quran).
