Ask The Imam Question and Answer

1258 I have been told to sit and listen to the Khutbah attentively. I have never been told to perform the following acts:

During Khutbah people sitting in the Attihiyyaat position folding their hands like in Salaat for the first Khutbah and then placing them on the thighs in the second Khutbah. I have been told off a couple of times of not following this procedure. I have been to many Masjids around the world, all Sunni school of thought and Ahle-Sunna. I have never come across this practice during Khutbah.

Can you please explain, furthermore, I have been told in the Masjid (by elders) that it is a requirement to perform such an act. If this is the case, please clarify.
Allama Nizam al-Din writes that ‘it is Mustahabb to sit during the Khutbah like one sits in the final sitting of Salah. This is what has been mentioned in al-Mi’raj al-Diraya. (cited in Tafhim al-Masa’il, IV: 93).

Mufti Munib al-Rahman adds that folding the arms in the first part and placing them on the thighs in the second part has not been proven according to his research. But this should not deter us from the fact that we should also sit in the Qa’da position during the Khutbah. It creates discipline and motionless, which are essential elements of the Friday prayer. It also creates more space in the mosque on Fridays.
