Ask The Imam Question and Answer

557 My grandmother died just over 2 months ago. I have been very concerned what would happen to her. It was a very sudden death. Now another member of the family has just died, it makes me think what happens after death. Could you please explain to me?

Also every Thursdays we do Darood / Katham on food for my grandmother and people say the deceased come back to smell the food who your giving it for. Is this true? Does there soul come back on this earth every Thursdays and smell the food then go back?
May Allah (S.W.T) grant you and your family Sabr (patience).

Hatham (Ehsal-e-Sawab) can be done at anytime. Some people do it on Thursdays because a Hadith specifies that the souls visit the house of their relative on Thursdays to see what is being done for them. This is the main reason why this is done i.e. to pray for the ease of our dead.

It is incorrect to state that the deceased come to smell the food.

As to your question regarding: What happens to you after death; there is much literature available which cover this topic in detail. One such book we can recommend is : Death, The Final Journey by Muhammad Abd Al Mannan.
