Ask The Imam Question and Answer

626 Can you clarify whether a dog can be kept in the home as a pet, rather than for purposes relating to security?
Keeping a dog as a pet is not allowed in Islam.

However, Islam does not rule out the keeping of dogs for security purposes, in which case the dog would be expected to be kept outside the home. It is extremely difficult to maintain the required cleanliness of the home if a dog is kept inside the home.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) himself said that when a dog licks from a utensil, then this should be cleaned at least seven times (whereas He (S.A.W) said other unclean utensils only need to be cleaned three times). Such factors make it practically impossible to keep a dog inside the home.
