Surma (Kohl)

Surma, also known as Ithmid, or Isfahan Collyrium is made from a silvery dark grey stone, which is crushed into a very fine powder. It is the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W) to apply Surma when going to sleep. It stays in the eyes for longer and makes it more effective.

Surma is recommended to be applied both by men and women. Surma has many benefits, such as it brightens the eyesight, and strengthens and increases the growth of the eye lashes, strengthens the optic nerve. It is considered the best Kohl when mixed with musk powder for elderly people with poor vision weakened by old age.

Hazrat Ibn Al Qayyim (R.A) has mentioned that Ithmid, helps reduce skin folds and creases growing on the eyelid, mange (skin disease) of the eyelids and it relaxes eyestrain. It helps detoxify eye moisture and eases congestion in tear ducts. It helps natural cleansing of the eyes and helps to protect the eyes from dust particles floating in the air and brightens one’s sight. When Ithmid is mixed with honey (diluted in water) and applied on the edge of the eyelid, it can help reduce
headaches.

Hazrat Ibn Abbas (R.A) has related, "The Messenger (S.A.W) had a Collyrium container out of which He (S.A.W) applied Collyrium every night, in each eye three times". (Tirmidhi)

Imam Shafi (R.A) states that four things that strengthen the eyesight, to sit towards the Qibla, to use Surma before sleeping, to look towards something with green colour and to keep the clothes clean.
