Manners of Drinking (Part 1)
1. Water should be drunk sitting down:
It is very important that we sit down, when drinking water.
Hazrat Abu Hurayra (R.A) reported that the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) said: “None of you shall drink standing. Whoever forgets let him vomit.”
Exceptions are given to ZAM-ZAM water and remaining water of ‘wuzu’. These should be drunk with great respect by standing and facing ‘Qibla’.
2. Looking into water before drinking:
It is the Sunnah of the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) to look into the cup or glass before drinking water. This is to check if the water is clean, as drinking water which is unclean may affect your health.
3. Drinking or Eating in Gold or Silver utensils is Prohibited:
Hazrat Hudhaifah (R.A) reported: “I heard the Prophet (S.A.W) say, ‘Don’t eat and drink in utensils that are made of gold and silver, because they are for the unbelievers in this world, and they are for you (the believer) in the next world’”, meaning in Paradise.
4. Drinking water with Right Hand: (Bukhari)
We must drink with right hand. While eating, if the right hand is covered with food, then lift the glass of water with left hand and give support with right hand.
5. Drinking water in Three parts:
Water should be drunk in three sips (taking a breath between each sip). It is important not to breathe into the glass whilst drinking.
Hazrat Anas (R.A) reported that our beloved Prophet (S.A.W) used to take three breaths whilst drinking.
