Ramadan 2006 (Sunnah : The Perfect Example)

Manners of Sleeping (Part 2)

Right way of sleeping on the Back:

  1. Lye on the back (without pillows), head facing north (if possible).
  2. Place the right hand on the forehead; the palm should cover the ear.
  3. Place the left hand on stomach.
  4. Hold the heel of right foot with the toe and fingers of left foot.

This way of sleeping has many advantages. Sleeping without pillow is good for heart, brain, and eyes. However in each Sunnah there are numerous advantages.

If you have any discomfort in sleeping this way, then at least sleep for some time in this posture. Sleeping for some time, with the intention of Sunnah, Inshallah you will be rewarded. Allah (S.W.T) says your deeds are judged upon your intension.

Allah (S.W.T) dislikes person sleeping on belly:

According to one Hadith, this posture of sleep (i.e. sleeping on face and stomach) is the way of ‘Dozakhi’ (people of hell).

Of course exception is for the purpose of physical exercise or disabilities. As mentioned before Allah (S.W.T) knows your intention.

Hazrat Abu Hurayra (R.A) reported that Holy Prophet (S.A.W) saw a man lying on his belly and said: “Allah does no like this posture.”   (Tirmidi)

Hazrat Abu Dhar (R.A) reported: “I was lying upon my belly when Holy Prophet (S.A.W) passed by me. He (S.A.W) kicked me and said, “This is the posture of the inmates of Hell’’.   (Ibn-e-Majah)

Doing Wuzu before sleeping:

By sleeping in the state of wuzu, rewards of worship are written in our ‘Amaal Naama’ (book of deeds) all night long.
