Ramadan 2006 (Sunnah : The Perfect Example)

Sunnah of Going to the Toilet

Dua for going to the toilet:

When going to the toilet the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) would wear footwear. He (S.A.W) would cover his blessed head and before stepping into the room, He (S.A.W) would read:

‘Allah-Humma Inni A’oodhubika Minal Khubthi Walkhabaith’

Meaning:

“O Allah I seek protection in you from the male and female devil.”

Manners of going to the toilet:

  • Enter the toilet with the left foot and leave with the right foot.
  • Any items (ring, locket etc) that have the names of Allah, Prophet (S.A.W) or any verse of the Quran should be removed before entering.
  • One should not face or have back towards the Qibla whilst relieving.
  • One should not talk or read in the toilet.
  • The right hand should not be used to cleanse oneself.
  • One should sit to urinate and not stand.
  • One should be very careful about the splashing of urine drops.
  • After relieving yourself, wash your hands up to the wrists thrice.

Dua for leaving the toilet:

‘Ghufrannaka Alhamdu-Lillahilladhi Adh-haba A’nnil Adhaa Wa-A’faani’

Meaning:

“O Allah I seek your pardon. All praises are due to Allah who has taken away from me discomfort and granted me relief.”

Hazrat Habib bin Saleh (R.A) has related that when the Holy Prophet (S.A.W) entered the toilet, He (S.A.W) would put on his shoes and cover his head.  (Ibn Sa’ad)
